Music

I’ve always been a bit into good new sounds. After I picked up the trumpet and worked away at it during my high school days and into my university years, I started to accumulate a lot of diverse jazz records. My CD collection kept growing during my undergrad and during my 1999/2000 gap year in Australia. Thereafter, Napster and MiniDiscs helped me to keep the music alive while planting trees in Northern Ontario and on Vancouver Island (+/- 900000 lifetime trees planted). After my PhD field research in Tanzania and Senegal – when Lauren and I came together in late 2007 – we learned that we were both iTunes addicts. We stockpiled a lot of world music during our year together in New Zealand (2008) and over the tenure-track/PhD student/Cameroon phase that followed (2009-2015). In our busyness we totally failed to consolidate our collection. I finally got around to organizing our favourites into genre and activity playlists in 2019. Below I offer a few insights on some of the music that envelops our lives….

Trumpet

Yup. The trumpet. The pandemic brought it back in a big way in my life. When I was active I played with the Georgian Sound Big Band and joined the Queen's University Bands. I also fell in with the party band Franklin's Fault and my work made it on to two CDs. In August 2003 I also performed in the pit band for the original stage production of Evil Dead: The Musical. I'm back working on it....
